LinuxCon 2009 in Portland

Downtown Portland
Portland, Oregon

Well well well, do I have some exciting news to share with you today. You may or may not know that the Linux Foundation – employers of Linus Torvalds himself – are holding their first ever annual conference this year in Portland, Oregon. They’re calling it LinuxCon and it’ll be 3 days where some of the best known names and brightest minds in the Linux world can come together… oh, and me!! I might bring the brightest mind quota down slightly, but it’s probably a good thing for the averages anyway. Yes that’s right, I’ll be going to LinuxCon on 21st – 23rd September this year in the good ol’ US of A. My good friends at the Software Freedom Law Centre in New York are going to the event too. You’ve probably heard me mention that I produce their podcast; if not, stick around 5 minutes and you will. Oh I just did, never mind. Bradley even offered to let me share his hotel room if I had trouble finding accommodation, but I snore so badly I really couldn’t do that to him. When we went to Berlin for Linux Tag, Fab only lasted one night in the same room as me. I do snore pretty loud I’m told, though personally I’ve never heard it, so I don’t know what all the fuss is about. Above all it will be a great chance for me to finally meet Bradley and Karen in person, I’m really looking forward to that. I’ve been working on their show for about a year now and it’s always been a lot of fun to produce. I think they do important work on behalf of all Free Software developers at the SFLC.

I’ve never been to the US before, though I have made it as far as Canada, many moons ago. My flights and hotel are booked so I wanted to share the exciting news with you all. Linus Torvalds will be on a panel at the event and there are so many other great speakers it’s hard to know where to begin; including Bradley of course. Mark Shuttleworth is doing a keynote which I’ll be interested to hear. I hope to record some interviews with various people and soak up the atmosphere while I’m there.Ā  Hopefully I’ll get a chance to see some of Portland as well, it looks beautiful. Just see the picture above if you don’t believe me. Maybe I’ll even get a chance to meet some local podcast listeners too, who knows. If you’re in the area and you want to say hi, just let me know. Leave a comment or send an email.

I can’t wait, Portland here I come. You’ve been warned šŸ˜‰

  1. Dan, if you come through the north east (Boston or north of) let me know, I might be able to swing down to share a pint. Enjoy the CON

    • @x1101 – Thanks. Sadly I don’t think I will be near the North East. I’m flying to Atlanta and I only have an hour or two before a connecting flight to Portland. On the way back it’s Portland straight to Amsterdam, then on to Manchester. If by some chance I do end up in that area though I’ll let you know. I’ve always wanted to visit Boston anyway, so hopefully sometime in future šŸ™‚
